Atherfield is a small hamlet located in the Back of the Wight near Brighstone, Near the sea it is a popular tourist spot

History[]

Atherfeild bay nearby is one of the best sources of cretaceous fossils and brachiosaurus dinosaur bones,this is one of the places that gives the Wight the nickname "Dinosaur Isle". Many famous scientists started their careers on this coast. The unique land formation on this coast means fossils upto 30 million years old are uncovered because the strata are angled sharply. [1]

The bay also marks the landward edge of the The Dreaded Atherfield Ledge, an underwater outcrop that has claimed many ships including the SS Eider and more, a lifeboat station used to be here including a unique launching system over the cliff. [2]
