Brighstone Villa is a small roman ruin the only one south of the downs.

The Romans lived in the shadow of the downs where the remains of a villa were found similar to that found in Newport, only a 400 yards away on farm land further up the road close to a spring, the Buddle Brook from this runs through a now converted mill house. The villa was discovered when 19th century scavengers removed the buildings stones and found skeletons.
